Jesse Tree

Jesse Tree 3The Jesse Tree

When people are asked if they’ve heard of the Jesse Tree, many will say: “Yes. I’ve heard of it.  It has something to do with Christmas, doesn’t it?”  Actually, it has everything to do with Christmas.

Jesse was the father of the great King David of the Old Testament. The Jesse Tree represents the family tree, or genealogy of Jesus Christ.  It tells the story of God’s salvation plan, beginning with creation and continuing through the Old Testament, to the coming of the Messiah.  The name comes from Isaiah 11:1, “A shoot will sprout from the stump of Jesse . . .”

At the beginning of Advent homemade ornaments, symbolizing each event in the family tree, are made.  Each day, in the proper order, an ornament is added to the Jesse Tree, a small evergreen. The placing of each ornament on the tree is accompanied with the appropriate Biblical verse, followed by the singing of the hymn “O come, o come, Emmanuel”.

Advent is a season of preparation – how appropriate it is that we are reminded each day as we progress to the ultimate Christmas gift – our newborn Christ.

We will be featuring in each week’s newsletter the progression of our own Jesse Tree, with the symbolic ornaments for the period attached, noting the symbols and verses for the proper days.
