Prayer Shawl Binding Ceremony

A Binding Ceremony contains a series of prayers and blessings for the recipients of prayer shawls, and also for those who make them.  This is an example of a Binding Ceremony.

St. Catharine’s

Prayer Shawl Ministry Binding Ceremony

Jesus spoke to them, saying,  “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness but will have the light of life.” Gracious and loving God, as we light our candle we remember Your Light which shines into darkness, Your Son whose life, death and resurrection gives us hope, Your Spirit which permeates every corner of our lives.

Be present when we knit these shawls with busy hands and joyful hearts.
We remember all those for whom we knit these shawls:
Those who are lonely and need to know they are loved,
Those who are ill and yearn for healing of body, mind and spirit,
Those who face challenging decisions and search for guidance,
Those who are grieving and welcome comforting words and actions,
Those who are celebrating newness of life and rejoice in the warmth and
richness surrounding them.
Bind us together in one community of love, founded on the faith that Your love and grace are everlasting.  Amen

I ask a blessing from all who have come before me; whose hands have been instruments of creation and beauty; who have used humble tools and hand-spun wool in order to provide comfort and warmth for those in need of your loving care.
Bless, also, the yarn, crochet hooks and knitting needles. May any negative energy be cast away as it is cast on; and all positive energy bound in as it is bound off. In their simplicity, may strength and grace be found.

Binding of the Prayer Shawls (Read while shawls are being bound)
Dear God,
As I make this shawl for one of your lambs, please….
Bless my hands – that will start with nothing and create something warm & comforting.
Bless my mind- that I will create something useful.
Bless my imagination – that I will design something unique & beautiful.
Bless my heart – that some of it will go with this hug to let the receiver know it was made with love.
Bless my patience – that I will continue to move forward & focused on this gift until I am finished,
Bless my soul – that it is open to continue to make gifts for those in need.
Bless my family & friends – who encourage me to continue making these gifts that give hope, faith & love.
Bless the one that receives this gift. May it be a reminder of Your love each time they wrap it around their soul. Let it bring healing to those in need it and serve as a reminder that someone cares.

And we do all this in Your Holy Name. Amen

Blessing of the hands

Blessed are the works of your hands. May your creations bring love, support, and comfort in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord. Thank you for the loving care with which you will create these shawls. May God renew your spirit and bless you this day and always.   Amen.

Blessing for completed shawls

May God’s grace be upon these shawls…  warming, comforting, enfolding and embracing.

May this mantle be a safe haven… a sacred place of security and well-being… sustaining and embracing in good times as well as difficult ones.
May the one who receives this shawl be cradled in hope, kept in joy, graced withthe love and peace of Our Lord Jesus Christ.  Amen.

Make me a channel

Make me a channel of your peace.
Where there is hatred let me bring your love.
Where there is injury, your pardon, Lord
And where there is doubt, true faith in you.

Make me a channel of your peace
Where there’s despair in life, let me bring hope
Where there is darkness, only light
And where there’s sadness, ever joy.

Oh, Master grant that I may never seek
So much to be consoled as to console
To be understood as to understand
To be loved as to love with all my soul.
Make me a channel of your peace
It is in pardoning that we are pardoned
It is in giving to all men that we receive
And in dying that we are born to eternal life.

Closing Prayer  (All)

Dear Lord,

We thank you for the generous gifts we have received and ask for your continued blessings on our homes and families.

May the Holy Spirit guide us as we share of our time, talents, prayers and love in this Prayer Shawl Ministry

We also ask your blessings on the recipients of the shawls that they may feel comforted by your steadfast love and if possible that their health be restored. We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord,
